rlenz, using Nvidia Quadro FX 1700 with CS3 10.0.1, 17:02:2010 14:13:03: turning aero back on helped photoshop to recognize my gpu and the brush-lag-problem went away! thanks for this information. anonymous, 11:01:2010 09:31:07: The ruler works as temporary solution, I don't have aero though. It's sad the bug is in CS2 and CS3. Are there no permanent solution/hack for this ? aten, using CS3 on Nvidia 9800GT, 02:01:2010 13:30:47 You are the MAN!
I never clocked it was the RULERS that were slowing things down. I thought I had tried everything. I was already using aero but never thought it could be the rulers that were making it chug so bad!
anonymous, 12:12:2009 02:01:05: amazing simply amazing thanks so much Tom, using CS4, 08:12:2009 10:45:17 Changing your default printer to pdf or a none networked printer will help photoshop start up faster. Start » Printers and Faxes » Right click Adobe pdf(or none networked printer) » Set as default Hope this helps a bit.
Marcos, using CS3 with GForce 8600 gt,13:11:2009 22:08:55: I love you man!!!! Switching to Aero solved the problem. I've been trying for long to find a solution and this worked instantly.
Thanks!!!!! Crunchie, 17:10:2009 10:59:44 I just went through 3 PC's in work, and the internet saved me in 20 mins. THANK YOU!

Hi!! About the photoshop lag using windows Aero I found the Cause of the problem! In the Open Gl Advanced Settings in Photoshop Just disable "Color Matching!" Let me know if that Helped you and if the problem persists!
Code Monkey, using cs4 9600M, 29:09:2009 14:43:45: Bloody wonderful. I Just disabled all the openGl settings, in edit->preferences->performance.
Now I can finally enjoy my shiny new Intuos 4.
XD Code Monkey, using cs4 9600M, 29:09:2009 14:33:31: @ anonymous "CS4 has the same problems. Shame on Adobe for not fixing this. Probably Microsoft\'s fault tho."
This problem is persistant across platforms. Stop being a stupid wanker, adobe wrote the software.
Windows 7 64bit here, messing with aero makes no difference. Rulers and zoom also make little difference. Chameleonbot, 21:09:2009 21:13:48, using Nvidia GTS 250 with CS3, says: None of these worked, cant even find AERO or this Open GL
Mikko, 23:08:2009 12:55:48, using ATI Radeon 4890 with CS4, says: Thanks for the tip! turning the AERO on in my Vista 64 helped me instantly. I was looking for a solution for this for hours, but finally I founf something usefull. You saved my day! Cheers! ;) istanbul, 28:06:2009 10:55:37 using CS4, says: its works, thank you... This worked for me. Thanks. It was starting to drive me crazy. Zzolerr, 25:06:2009 06:55:37 using cs3 8800gts, says: Wow, works 4 me res, 09:05:2009 23:51:14, using cs4 with hd4850, says: as quoted; "actually, i found that having Open GL Drawing enabled, but every checkbox under

that was the solution in my case. Thanks a lot man! SirFency, 23:04:2009 13:36:39, using CS4 with nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX, says: This helped with the brush tool which is great but I still have laggy performance when moving windows around. Richard, 14:03:2009 21:00:22, using CS4 with NVidia 9300, says:
Enabling aero works because aero uses the dedicated graphic card. If you disable aero, the cpu needs to draw the windows in vista, thus slowing down performance J, 17:02:2009 08:29:05, using CS4 with Nvidia 9800, says: I turned OpelGL off and got rid of lagging. Barbara Goodson, using Photoshop 7, 16:02:2009 21:18:39, says:
Will photoshop 7 work on this vesta computer? I got it to download and it went in the DVD & Cd drive. nothing will come up except that it is in that drive. Can you help me Thank you. jasman 30:01:2009 11:04:55, says: I don't think it is Windows or Photoshop you should blame for this. The problem I have is this Dell Laptop. My guess is, that the NVidia gfx card is an exclusive one
only for Dell Laptops. That is why the drivers are only being developed for Dell. And that is the reason why the drivers are being used by only a few people. Damn, you can't even find an NVidia driver for your Dell Laptop at the NVidia web site! It is only available at the Dell support site. Does this ring a bell? Your Dell Laptop has a unique gfx card! desmo, 29:01:2009 21:29:29, says:
switching to the aero theme doesn't fix the problem. mari, 22:01:2009 17:30:46 says: It didn't work for me eather. I allways have Aero on anyways. JP, 17:01:2009 19:03:57, says: I started using PS7 again because of crashes and slow performance in CS3. The random crashes made it impossible to use. I have an Intel Quad with an Nvidia 8800GTS.
I only miss the multi-level layer groups. I had to turn Aero off though, because it would slow down when clicking the layers palette in PS7. anon, 17:01:2009 17:55:29 says: "Thanks, that helped" tom, 12:01:2009 21:28:50, says: didn't help at all waffle, 12:01:2009 02:08:40, says:
I'm running Aero, and I\'m still getting this awful lag on CS4. anonymous, 28:12:2008 11:41:48 says: "Thanks, that helped". Shadi, 27:12:2008 17:14:09 says: unfortunately I'm already on Aero, Vista Ultimate, and have been facing the stutter issue when using any brush on CS3. I have a quad core intel CPU and an Nvidia 8800
GT. Just wanted to share experience rather than raining on anyone's parade. Karrey, 22:12:2008 20:44:59 says: This problem caused me to change most of my hardware on my computer that I bought a year ago. Well, turning on aero helped the photoshop stutering problem, but with aero turned on, the 3D software Maya Autodesk wouldn't work instead. I had an other load of problems in photoshop after changing back to XP, but it got
solved after upgrading motherboard and cpu.
ANYWAY, now I am at a new laptop this time, and this same annoying problem appears. I remembered this thread/site and thought I'd try the "turn aero on" thing again, and this time it works both in photoshop CS and maya. I am relieved!! But I really don't enjoy the aero interface, but it will have to do. My work depend on photoshop!
I hope, though, that this will be fixed in a better way by MS or photoshop (don't
know where the source of the problem is). Thanks for a really good temp problem solver. :) *thumbs up* anonymous, 03:12:2008 15:31:07, says "Thanks, that helped".
ixobelle, 05:11:2008 06:01:55 says: actually, i found that having Open GL Drawing enabled, but every checkbox under the advanced options tab unchecked provided the best performance. I still get
acceleration, and animated zooming & flick panning (etc), but no lag while painting with the brush etc.
hope that helps. anony at 31:10:2008 00:49:05 says helped: Thanks! Turning on Aero worked. (Weird though) I'm pretty frustrated about Adobe and MS products in general...especially the Zune software and Illustrator being completely incompatible, with no solution whatsoever.
Thankfully this is a workable fix for me. anonymous at 28:10:2008 21:35:40 says problem is still unsolved: CS4 has the same problems. Shame on Adobe for not fixing this. Probably Microsoft's fault tho. Nyli at 17:10:2008 22:23:10 says helped: Wow, I too cannot believe this actually worked (Switching to Aero Desktop scheme).
I was getting rather depressed that I had just wasted 1000$ upgrading my computer almost solely for Photoshop work (ok, maybe some games too), only to have the performance in Photoshop actually plummet drastically.
On my XP computer (3.4ghz P4, 2gb DDR2 667, Nvidia GeForce 6800GS 256mb), I was able to paint in Photoshop on a 400mb file all while running WinAmp, Firefox and World of Warcraft at the same time...with no significant drop in performance.
On my new Vista (32 bit) computer (2.83ghz Intel Quad Core, 4gb DDR2 800, Nvidia Geoforce 9800 GTX+ 512mb), despite an AMAZING 3 second start up time for Photoshop and only 2 to 4 seconds to load filter effects, Photoshop was plagued with the utterly horrible cursor/brush lag that made it almost unusable even with no other programs running. I'm so glad I found this post. Problem solved. scAtterBrain at 11:10:2008 00:04:57 says helped:
Holy crap, I can't believe this works. Leave it to Microsoft to write software that actually confuses the graphics card when you choose a LESS complex appearance. Thank you for the advice!
Vista Business 64-bit Dual Core AMD Opteron 2.41 GHz 4.00 GB RAM NVIDIA QuadroFX 1300 Mat at 29:09:2008 15:38:55 says helped: I disable Aero because it was causing the cursor to lag when i was scrolling while
zoomed in (by moving the cursor to the edge of the screen while using the marquee tool) but as you all know this caused the cursor to lag everywhere BUT near the edge of the screen. Now when I re-enable Aero, the lag everywhere is gone but the edge of the screen when scrolling....sigh, can't win Amy Beaumont at 22:09:2008 11:55:49 says helped: I had narrowed down the 'cause' of the studdering to when I'm scrolling around a
large image [either in the Navigator or with the Hand tool], and I got around it by tabbing in and out of the Window [Ctrl+Tab].
But... this worked! It's so bizarre that switching to Aero worked. It's the complete opposite to everything else I tried - I was mainly trying to reduce RAM usage [pretty unneccesary considering I have 4GB RAM anyway]. Shame Aero looks ugly as hell, but it's a small price to pay for getting rid of this irriting bug. anonymous at 2008-08-13 18:28:05 says helped: removing the ruler guides did the trick, thanks for posting GM at 2008-08-07 13:01:50 says helped: You can also zoom in/out, minimimize/maximize the program window, or change screen mode by hitting the 'F' key. Works similar to the 'ctrl+R' thing. There are probably other ways too.

scaleless at 2008-06-03 05:30:57 says helped: insane that this works, most things tell you to turn Aero off as it consumes resources and causes slowdown...thanks Bo Jørgensen at 2008-08-01 10:30:57 says helped: Thanks .. I'm baffled - what a wierd reason for a pretty annoying problem. But it actually worked.
